Zigzagging backroads all morning. It’s not always a tranquil hike where landscape work is produced. Often, it’s more calculated work. Driving back and forth, searching for something of interest or a development in the weather. But even in this production mode, it’s a wonderful pursuit. There’s geographic benefit to using the car, quite simply you cover more ground.
On this cold northwest morning, the low angled sun, half diffused is perfectly in place to illuminate from behind. There’s an old adage in photography to put the sun at your back. This is wrong, so very wrong I can’t stress it enough. Put the sun in your frame, especially if it’s softened from cloud cover. The illuminations achieved add such beautiful depth.
