It is indeed a hunt, that search for a convergence of light, subject and interest. At times you must become an aesthetic predator and think of your final image as the prey. Because landscape art is external and at times you have to trap it, out flank the building storm, get ahead of the rising sun, be in place when ‘it’ happens. What is the ‘it’, well my friend that is entirely up to you. Close your computer, turn off your phone and go explore, see what you find.

With wide open spaces, innumerable backcountry dirt roads, the Eastern Sierra is a wide open canvas. Storms can be seen developing on the horizon, allowing time and space to setup interesting frames. As this storm was dissipating pockets of clear air allowed beams of sunlight to shine through. I raced down a nondescript dirt road to find a foreground. I didn’t want to lose the beautiful rays of light. When I framed up the image I was pleasantly surprised by the dark island of cinder on the right. To me, it balanced the heavier mountains and storm on the left.
