I’m drawn to expanses of monotone color. The visual starkness, the simplicity of form, the delicate balance. In stripping away information a clarity is reached. Like a composition by Philip Glass. The purpose of the artist is to expose something that others don’t or can’t see. To strip away the obvious and reveal something deeper.
I was fascinated by the rich autumn colors paired against the soft blue of sky, delineated by the crisp line of horizon. Duality at work again. Photographed along the northwestern edge of San Francisco Bay, these dense marshlands thrive in a world of salt and wind and tide. The connection to the land is tenuous and yet they do not belong in the ocean either. Crabs scurry through the tangle of stems and mice bed down for the day. The places that connect two worlds are always in transition and belong to no one.
