The snow geese were leaving, called south from some unseen trigger deep within their bodies. The fields where they ate all summer are empty and a little lonely. This is the switching time, from an autumn to a winter.

I am back home and my mama is out with me, we are wandering. We will get breakfast after this image is taken at a little restaurant on the edge of Bellingham Bay. We both will have coffee and eggs Benedict. And on the way up Chukanut Drive back to town we stop at a small beach and walk barefoot in the sand. She will die a year and a half later and I can remember every detail of every time she came out photographing with me. I don’t ever want to go back, but in the end we all must, there is no holding on to forever. And if you can stomach that, it’s a beautiful thing.

Photographed along the Chuckanut Road south of Bellingham Washington, the coastal mountains of the north give way to open fields, farmlands and marshes.

Location: Bellingham Bay, the Eastern Shore.

Technical: Nikon D810, Voigtlander 40mm, 4 vertical vertical frames
