When water evaporates from Badwater Basin what is often left are these hexagonal shapes formed by simple expansion and contraction. Hexagons are formed because they are an extraordinarily efficient shape.

What is lost in this analytic description, is the utter stillness, the rawness exuded in the harsh reality of this place. I hike out a mile or so and look back to my truck, full of water and food and shelter for the night and standing here I’m tricked into thinking this is an easy landscape. It is not, in this void of basin and salt is the edge of death. Nothing lives here, it is the realm of evening poets and expression.
