Sometimes it’s not a backcountry adventure, sometimes it’s a road trip wander. I was driving along highway 20 in the North Cascades, I was here to photograph not as a happenstance to someplace else. When in this mode I often zigzag back and forth along sections of road, looking and relooking at a particular scene. I’ll get out of the car, stare for awhile, get back in and drive a few miles, turn around and backtrack my way to the same spot. It’s a search, a journey where progress is not measured in distance or time but in the creation of an image. I saw a waterfall out of a corner of my eye and pulled over. The western slope of the North Cascades is dense forest, all moss and fir and alder. The waterfall was buried in this and wasn’t too enticing. But I scrambled my way up its flank anyway. I wanted to see how the upper portion looked. I was pleased in finding this quiet scene. All the elements are here to convey a northwest mountain woodland; stones and water, moss and fern, maples and fir. Progress made.
