We left early in the morning, stopping at a coffee stand. When I would visit them she’d come with me on the mornings I’d go out to photograph. It’d be just the two of us. We’d wander the backroads of northern Washington. I’d pullover to shoot and she’d often stand with me. She didn’t mind that I’d drive the same strip of road back and forth or stop and stare at some possible subject, neither of us saying anything. She didn’t mind where we ended up, she was along for the adventure of it, she was always up for an adventure. The only person I’ve known who’d regularly wake before me. Now she’s gone and I miss these mornings.
Years on I look back on this image and the morning we shot this tree. This lone tree in a field of grass, it reminds me of how she was.
