Chance favoring the prepared mind*, that’s god damn right. When I’m on a multi-day solo shooting trip it takes a full day to get into the flow state. That zone of sharpened artistic senses where nothing else matters, not home, not bills, not even food. In this state everything is tuned to a knife edge and all I have eyes for is making art.
It was in this state I found myself deep in a thick storm, dark enough to turn day into twilight. My eyes, always scanning, always searching. And then a glimmer of light, the bare minimal opening to the west. A break in the tonal desert, image forming, but I must get off the highway, and fast. Service road, perfect. Take it. Turns into mud, keep going. Fence line, camera out, can’t keep water off of it, only the lens needs to be clear, rubber bands and a plastic bag. Opening, light pours through. Capture it. Clouds close back up, storm continues. Wet…but damn, that was good. Smiling.
* thank you Ansel
