What’s important, the symbol or what the symbol represents. Symbology is important to culture and to a national identity. If that’s important to you. What’s important to me is not the object but the unfinished ideal. Here is the Washington Monument, dedicated to George Washington. A man of his station and time and position. Do we nod and say well that was the time he lived in. Do we admonish him for owning other human beings. History is messy.

They could not have known what they were creating and yet they chose actions and words that would far exceed the initial meaning they implied with them. It’s this unknowable of their creation I find most fascinating not the men themselves.

I don’t think this when I’m here this night photographing. I see beautiful structure and contrast and want to photograph it.
