This night we crossed the tidal basin to walk the Jefferson Memorial. It was quieter on this side, less people about. These monuments are both beautiful and beguiling. I’m not sure how to feel about them. Not for historical reasons, which are dualistic at best, but because monuments to people have always confused me. Regardless of this, the bright marble, granite and bluestone gneiss looks marvelous under the artificial light. But this also offers something of a photographic metaphor, the beacons of an illuminated history. I like metaphor more than the object because the metaphor eloquently encapsulates our mythology and all its unfinished nuanced messiness.
