The first time my wife felt our daughter move inside her we were walking under the canopy of redwoods, deep in Jedadiah Smith. The romantic side of me likes to think this was a symbol of something, but that would be ego. So instead we merely smiled, it was all so fitting and proper. Being in nature is our dogma.
I struggled with this composition for a long time. In the dense redwood forest light does not change, so I had time to think. The struggle was whether or not to show the ground. It’s these quiet moments of creative contemplation I almost enjoy more than the process of shooting. Yes, you can say why not just shoot several frames, with varying composition. But that’s missing the point, how often do you stop and think about a single creative issue rather than blindly stomping your way through it.
