I’ve been exploring the idea of expressionism in landscape photography for a long time, essentially to express the meaning of emotional experience rather than physical reality. Within photography is it possible to have a subjectless image without losing interest or expression. It was an idea born of trying to capture a specific image to show this and failing miserably until I came to the Redwood forests of California.
The idea was to shoot a forest in a way to limit what is known about it; no roots, no tops, no sky. Within these limitations having a balanced tonality that borders low contrast to keep the eye always moving. It’s an expression of forest, not a forest unto itself. This print is as close to this concept as I’ve gotten. The very nature of photography is the replication of reality. It is up to the photographer artists to manipulate that reality into form, to make you feel something.
