Mt. Humphrey dominates this High Sierra valley to its north. Like a lot of Sierra peaks, it’s 14,000’ height is visually misleading because it rises in a jumbled granite ridge, its apex no more than a single cone. But there it stands as a sentinel, a metaphorical gateway to the High Sierra, a place that is the foundation of my love of the landscape. Down below the world moves on and changes, but up here its worries are not mine for I am here to listen to the wind, watch the clouds and expose film.
