The trail was muddy and steep. All day was spent photographing waterfalls. Each one an intimate experience, each waterfall had its own personality. I could see this from a distance and I knew what kind of image I sought. I wanted a side view to show that the water wasn’t simply cascading down the canyon side, but flowing out like a woodland faucet. I wanted the surrounding canyon walls and forest to disappear into dark tonalities to emphasize the water. As I neared the fall the trail provided the perfect perch to see all this conspire. Some images are like this. They almost present themselves as finished pieces before I ever close the shutter.
