Photographing famous landmarks is a wonderful exercise in individuality. How to make a known thing have my own creative mark on it. The Golden Gate Bridge is iconic and next to the Brooklyn Bridge the most famous in America. I only need to show a part for the viewer to know what it is. A few years before this I did a photograph along the Oregon Coast called Heceta Head where I placed dark branches in the foreground to frame the image. Since that, I had been wanting to try the technique again. This view is from a bluff in the Presido Park which I had walked dozens of times before (we lived about a mile from here for over a decade). I wanted to keep the bridge and background light in tone and have the branches black. I used a red #25 filter to lighten the bridge tone which also darkened the deep green of the foliage. I think it’s important to photograph these landmarks but to approach them uniquely.
