I rose early this morning, as usual. Awoke to the predawn light and chilled air. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and made some coffee. When out shooting there’s such wonderful anticipation in the mornings. It’s the expectation that something you see today, whether out in the world or from within will be expressed on film. It’s life distilled to a simplicity rarely felt in everyday life. But why, why is that removal required. I’ll tell you why. It’s required for the same reason art is hung on white walls, why cathedrals exist, the point is an experience to chuck you out of your everyday. And when you are stripped of that you are open to clarity. And that clarity is where art comes from.

I turned onto nondescript dirt road that led west, the storm rolling off and down the mountains made no sound. It simply swept silently across the high desert and I was just an artist watcher half lost to the beauty of a place and a storm rolling east.
