I didn’t want this day to end. I was hungry and exhausted from shooting since sunrise but when in that flow state such things are trivial concerns, the hunt for the next image is of primary importance and that drive is hard to turn off.

I had just photographed In the Shadow of Sentinels and was walking back down trail when this boulder perked my interest. That’s how it happens. I don’t exactly know what drew me, maybe the 25 foot scale or the low contrast paired against the dynamic clouds. That’s how it goes and you don’t stop to question the why you let your practiced actions un-shoulder the camera bag and setup.

There’s a mystery in the soft contrast and a tension with the clouds. There’s almost an expectation of something that’s just about to happen. I honestly don’t know what this image is about but something about it has always drawn me in.
