Photography may be the only medium where the tools are brought to the subject. Doubly so with landscape photography. The canvas exists out there somewhere and I need to find it. But it’s more than that because it’s a merging of two things; the found subject and my interpretation of it through the manipulation of my tools. Sometimes the the subject is not obvious and requires a deeper search. This is such an image.
The weather was bland, no clouds, poor light. But I was out and in that mood. The mood of creation. These posts caught my attention, their graphic nature. I placed the sky on a higher Zone and placed the shadows of the posts on Zone III. I wanted to the water to blur into a tone and have little resemblance to water as a thing and set the exposure minutes long. I locked open the shutter with a small screw knob and sat and waited and watched. It was only later, after I developed and printed the image that I saw the bird, which didn’t move a muscle the entire time I had my shutter open. Art in meditation.
