We all have family places in the wild. And when these places are described it’s often with a little preempt, saying that this is our family park. A personal sentiment, a connection to a place that has significant meanings attached to family history. And when these places are mentioned, a warm feeling ignites deep within, a closeness to a place through shared experience.

This is Capitol Reef. Perhaps the lesser known of the Utah desert parks but that is beside the point. Popularity is a social function of access or exposure or salability all of which Capitol lags behind its more famous siblings. But those constraints make it all the more special. It still takes effort to feel this place. It takes river crossings and backroad driving, it takes rough exposure and humility. It is quite simply our family park.
