Central Oregon is basaltic lava, flow upon flow of sharp volcanic rock. Many flows are young enough to not have eroded into topsoil. The Deschutes river carves its way north through these flows on its way to the Columbia River. There’s a young rawness to the landscape here, reducing it to the classic forms of rock, trees and water.
Like the duality of black and white photography there’s a duality to our language, of noun and verb. One is fixed the other dynamic. The landscape elements here are all noun and yet the interaction between them is verb. You see what I’m getting at. It’s the in between that matters, this is where art lives. It is not the thing that matters, it is the spirit of the thing that does.
