It’s near impossible to convey scale in a redwood forest without a human for scale, and being a landscape purist I won’t add a human. Scale isn’t always important to convey, but sometimes, standing there amongst these magnificent giants I want to. I tried to do that with this image by using a wide angle lens tilted slightly up. The wide angle lens tilted up produces an effect called ‘keystoning’ where vertical lines appear to be tilted toward the centerline. I used this effect to enhance the feeling up grandeur and depth. In other words, scale. Pairing this effect with a foreground solitaire tree adds to the overall appearance of massive trees. Which they are.
