I set myself a challenge. I had one frame of film left in my camera and didn’t want to pull it out and develop it before I used it. It was going to be a bright sunny day, not the best lighting. I walked out of my house with my gear and this single frame, no other rolls of film. I spent the rest of the afternoon walking along the river by my house searching for an image. With a single frame to use my observations narrowed. Because the light was bright and the shadows dense I looked for a smaller scene, something intimate. I saw this stone half out of the water. The sun was starting to crest the canyon rim and half lighting the stone and highlighting the water. I found my image. I wanted the stone to stand apart and knew water flow was key. I added neutral density filtration to lengthen the exposure which created movement in the water.
It’s these intimate moments of creative clarity when I love being a landscape artist. It is not a grand vista, it is an intimate study.
