At the far northwestern corner of the San Francisco peninsula lie a series of off shore rocks, called Seal Rocks. Named for the sea lions that regularly haul out on them, even though they are not seals. Both species are often colloquially called “seals”, accuracy be damned. The Cliff House restaurant and the Sutra Bath House ruins lie just onshore and this part of the city has an old feel. I’d go jogging up the hill overlooking these rocks and onto Lands End Park weekly. I only photographed these rocks a few times for it’s hard for me to photograph where I live and when I lived in the city I’d often leave to photograph. But once, during a clearing storm I drove the mile from our house to an overlook and walked out onto a small cliff outcropping to shoot. The storm was swirling both wave and cloud and it was magnificent looking out across this scene to the far Pacific horizon. I forgot for a time that I lived nearby and in that moment I was but a traveler, happening across a wonderful ocean storm.
