Sometimes all the elements of a landscape seamlessly come together and there is no thought as to the how or the why. It’s like the image has always been there, waiting for you to find it. If you’ve experienced what I’m talking about, even in other pursuits; running, dance or writing, you understand. The old Taoists call it Wu Wei, an action through non-action. Put another way, the action is so effortless that it’s as if it’s happening to you, not from you. It’s a flow state in the most pure form, a living poem.
Out beyond the eastern edge of Mono Lake lies a vast open plain. Find it if you can, stumble across it is better. There are no signs, you must zigzag unmarked dirt roads, turning left then right, then left again, always wandering, there is no destination out here, it’s in the journey that artistic discovery is made. Cross over that sand sea and you will find it, the image that sits waiting for you to come. Your only companion a lone raven, cawing.
