Like Yosemite, Zion has always felt a little like home to me. It’s comfortable and easy to wander this red valley. The stone walls, made of varying layers of sedimentary rock rise in cathedral grace and it’s no wonder the early pioneers named the place names after their religious iconography. The Nungwu people called it Moo Koon Tooh Veap (Earth Coming Up). I like that much better.
If you come here, wander the back canyon on foot. As you progress east along the Virgin River the noise of the road quiets and you’re left with the sound of cottonwood leaves rustling in wind and a scent that is only matched by the richness of the red rock.
